5 Years Development – ​​Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness is the field that deals with sounds (like the sounds letters make) and how these sounds come together to form words.

Developmental Stage

  • Clapping hands and counting syllables in words (eg computer, computer-computer).
  • Note: 50% of children reach this level by age 4.
  • Recognizes and sounds words that start with the same sound (eg cat – cup).
  • Distinguishes and blends words by beginning and rhyme (eg t+um=all) and can turn them into words when given sounds.
  • Counts sounds in words (eg hold – t-u-t =3 sounds).
  • Note: 50% of children reach this level by age 

Possible Situations Encountered When It Doesn’t Progress

  • The child may have difficulty extracting long words correctly because breaking them into meaningful and smaller parts may also be insufficient.
  • The child may have difficulty pronouncing longer words and recognizing similar word patterns.
  • The child may have difficulty spelling words correctly.
